I Pledge . . . .

This is a video made in response to the celebrities' "I Pledge" video, in which celebrities pledge allegiance to one man, Barack Obama. Frightening. (You can view the celebrities' video here.)

My Baby

Laney's growing up so fast. I put her hair in pigtails today. It lasted all of 2 minutes; just long enough to snap some pictures. She wasn't thrilled, but she sure was cute.

Princesses in the Park

A few weeks ago, my sister sent us a hand-me-down princess dress (already loved to pieces, literally). Mariah was ecstatic, to put it mildly. She has worn nothing else since. She's worn it multiple times to stores, the park, and the library. (I did tell her she could not wear her princess dress to church. I also insisted on another outfit for a bbq at Mike's school.) It makes laundry really easy . . . .

Our park has a great "archeological dig site."

"See ya, Mom."

I hear this often from my Mariah. She's always off to great places. The other day she got her stroller loaded and said, "Mom, see ya. We're going to Florida." And she was off, with Elaine close behind. (I didn't know she knew about Florida. Laur, I hope you're ready for some surprise visitors.)

The Exploration Place

We went to Marian's again a couple weeks ago. We had planned on going to the zoo one day, but then it was rainy, so we went to the Exploration Place instead. We loved it!

The building itself is really neat. It sits in the middle of a river, kind of, and all of the outside walls are glass. It was really fun to be inside in a huge thunder storm.

There are different rooms with different sciencey things, like flight simulators, a wind wall, a tornado machine, bug collections, water and sand toys, building things, and on and on. There's also an amazing play room!

We all went in one car. Five kids in carseats!

Hmm. I wonder how my kids came away with colds?!

Mariah's favorite thing was the giant bubble.

Laney found this little log cradle and climbed right in.

There was a little "stream" with rubber ducks, shells, and frogs. It had little pour spouts and different things to do with water.

Mariah loves to build.

In the boat . . . .

Rub-a-Dub-Dub and Other Fun Things

I loved doing this as a kid. I tried it on my girls for the first time a few days ago. They thought it was great!

We gave Mariah a mirror to see herself. I was a little nervous that she'd have a come-apart because she's very particular about being beautiful ALL the time. But she laughed and laughed. She asks now to "be a clown" when she's in the bath.

Elaine requested all these headbands. They lasted 30 seconds (maybe).

My cool girls.

We've been sick for the past week or so (Well, Mike and the girls mostly; I had a mild case for a day). Poor Mariah has watched more Disney Playhouse in the last week than her whole little life put together. (She doesn't seem to mind).

A few days ago, I was tired of being cooped up, so despite the rain and runny noses, I and the girls went to the park. We tried out a park we'd never been to. It was great! And only a 5 minute drive! (We have zero parks within walking distance). There was a great playground (2 actually), a little lake, lots of ducks and geese, and some trails through forested areas.

After we played on the playground for a while, explored the dock, and chased the ducks, I asked the girls if they wanted to go for a little hike in the forest. Mariah immediately leaned forward, put her hands in front of her in claws, and said in a very drawn-out, spooky whisper, "It's the Black Forest!" Thank you Little Einsteins.

Just as we entered the forest, a large predatory bird (an owl maybe?) silently swooped down in front of us and glided along the trail for a while before disappearing around a bend. Maybe a little bit spooky.

We had walked for maybe 50 yards along the trail (I carrying Elaine, and Mariah walking along jabbering non-stop), when I spotted very large, very fresh-looking k-9 tracks in the mud. Hmm. I quickly decided I, alone with the girls, did not want to meet up with whatever made those tracks. I don't remember exactly what I told Mariah--something about big paw prints and a possibly dangerous animal. We turned around and high-tailed it out of there. Mariah did not seem concerned in the least and loved talking about (in the same drawn-out, suspense filled whisper, with her hands stretched into claws) the "dangerous animal paw prints." Thank you Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. She told the story again (in the same voice with the same hands) to Mike at dinner that night.

I liked the park so much that we went back the next day with the stroller. There are miles of trail. I probably walked 3 miles or so before I finally decided we better get home and make dinner.

Another funny thing happened (only to me) in the forest. I just finished the last book of the Twilight series, and I was thinking to myself that this forest would be a perfect place for vampires and wolves. (I know. Nice thoughts to have while walking alone in a forest with 2 girls in a stroller. Although, the forest is really just a strip, maybe 50 yards wide, with houses on the east, and the park on the west, so it's not like I was really removed from civilization.) Anyway, I had just had some happy thoughts about vampires when I rounded a corner, and there on the ground (I'm not lying) was a set of fake vampire teeth. Very funny.

Plastic Naps and Other Fun Stuff

So, this is going to be a random conglomeration of happenings, stories, and pictures. No real rhyme or reason . . . .

Mariah says more and more funny things as she gets older. I really wish I were better at writing them down. I always think, "There's no way I'll forget that." And then, by the end of the day, when I want to tell Mike, I've already forgotten.

But here are a few things:

She loves to talk about being "all growed up."
  • "When I'm growed up, I can get married in the temple."
  • "When I'm growed up, I will be a mommy."
  • "Mom, look, I'm so growed up! (said while stretching up on her tippy toes and followed by a low, airy, throaty noise, like she's straining every muscle in her body, working so hard to be grown up.)
The other day, she stood up on her chair at the table, and said, "Mom! I'm growed up! Now I can be a mommy!" Then she paused, in thought, and asked, "Mom, can you teach me know how to be a mommy?" At least she thinks I'm doing an ok job, I guess?

When we first moved here, we went to the zoo. There was a dinosaur exhibit that terrified Mariah. Life-size dinosaurs moved and roared. Pretty scary. So, we had a talk about how they were only plastic, and she already knows dinosaurs are extinct. Well, now, anything that isn't real is "plastic." A few days ago, I was somewhat aware that she was lying down on the living room floor. She got up and came running to me:

Mariah: "Mom, I took a nap! Now we can make carob pudding!" (We sometimes make pudding if she takes a good nap.)
Me: "Hmm. I think we need to take a real nap in your bed."
Mariah: "I want to take a plastic nap."

Another note about dinosaurs . . . . I think she has bad dreams about them. She tells me there are dinosaurs in her room. She tells me often about how there was "a niddle tiny dinosaur right in the middle of my crib last night." I asked if this little tiny dinosaur was nice. She emphatically said, "No! It's a mean dinosaur." Each time we have yet another discussion about how dinosaurs are extinct. They are not real. "Yes," she says, "they're just plastic."

We went to Marian's again last week (Marian flew Christine out to help decorate her house. Have I mentioned that I love love love having a sister so close?), and Mariah loved wearing all of Elsa's princess dresses. (I'm afraid I have some sewing projects to complete before Christmas.)

Here's "Thunderella" making a quick getaway. She even had to kick off her glass slippers.

Some serious riding . . . .

Laney got in on the princess theme too.

A very pleased "Sleeping-Beauty-Princess-Arora."

And a beautiful white "Thunderella."

Marian let the kids help stir the no-bakes.

Christine has a captive audience.

Mariah did not appreciate Weston's desire to ride with her. She viewed it more as a horse-jacking. She and Weston (and all the kids, actually) got along beautifully this trip, which was a huge blessing. Marian, Christine, and I ignored them much of the time and got a ton done on Marian's house.

Here's one cute conversation I overheard between Mariah and Weston:

(Weston was pushing down on one edge of his plate and then letting it clack down repeatedly on the counter)
Mariah: (in a sweet, sing-songy voice) "Weston, please don't do that with your plate. If you do that, I will have to take your plate away, ok?"
Weston: (sheepishly) "Ok."
Mariah: (leaning in towards Wes with a very motherly expression on her face) "Weston, remember the rules. We don't do that with our plates."
Weston: (more sheepishly) "Ok."
Mariah: (still leaning in) "Do you understand? If you do that with your plate, I will have to take your plate away. Ok?"

Speaking of being grown up, here she is filling her daddy's shoes. With all the picture hanging going on at Marian's, the kids got very much into measuring and hammering. (We almost had some random holes in walls yesterday when Mariah found our hammer and a nail.)

Mariah asked me the other day to help her put all of her golf tees in the ground. When we were done, she said, "Now I will sit here and wait for them to grow!"

And, speaking of growing, she learned about seeds somewhere (not from me). I cut her a nectarine the other day. She said, "Mom, see this big seed inside the nectarine? If you plant it, it will grow into a nectarine tree!" Yes, dear. It will. (Things like this happen often, and I feel more and more sheepish about how much I am not teaching my girls).

Mariah loves cherries!

My girls. Mariah was trying to get Elaine to hold her hand. "Here, Laney. Let's go to the ball."

Don't you love her princess ball attire?

A close-up of the 2-inch cabbage patch cowboy boots. Hmm.

And a few more things:

We got a new van last week. When I put Mariah in for the first time, she walked straight to the back, climbed up on the seat, and said, "I'll just sit here on this couch."

I try (sometimes successfully) to follow advice given in the book Positive Parenting. One of the techniques is to make sure kids understand consequences, and to actually have them tell you what they are. If a child is misbehaving (say, coming out of her room at night), the parent might say, "If you come out again, I'll have to lock your door." The parent is then supposed to ask, "What will happen if you come out again?" Many children will say, "I don't know." The parent is supposed to calmly repeat the consequence, "I'll have to lock your door," and then the question, "What will happen if you come out again?" And this is repeated until the child states the consequence.

Well, Mariah spins everything I ever do and tries to use the techniques on me and other people (see conversation with Weston, above). After she states something she wants to happen or tells someone what to do, she'll ask, "What will happen if . . . " and then she'll come up with some consequence that will surely happen if I don't do as asked. I often think to myself, "Wow. I was just positive parented."

Crazy Laney

My Elaine is about as lovable as they come! She is a nut! Her antics are hard to describe; I wish everyone could meet her. I could just sit and watch her all day.

She's always exclaiming big things (very few words; lots of sounds) and saying 10 times more with her dramatic expressions--especially her eyes and eyebrows. When she falls or gets hurt, she tells me what happened by re-enacting the whole thing in a very dramatic fashion. (She's done this since she was quite young).

Elaine loves loves loves music and dancing. She keeps perfect tempo with her head and body and has since she was tiny (or maybe just young. i'm not sure she's ever been tiny). She gets a very serious look on her face when she's dancing. Very important stuff.

Here are some recent pictures:

Wearing Mariah's shoes.

Very serious about her cups.

Mike found these cabbage patch boots in his keepsakes. Laney walked around in them for a while.

And here are a couple of long (possibly boring to some) videos of the girl. The first was taken in early July, before she was walking. The second was just last week.
