Headband Girl

Mariah has always loved headbands. From the time she was very young, if she saw someone wearing a headband (or anything pretty in their hair, for that matter), she would pat her own head, indicating she wanted the same. Only recently has she been able to put them on by herself, and only even more recently will she actually leave them on for longer than 30 seconds.

Bath-time Oops

Last night Mike turned the water on for Mariah's bath and then left the room. A couple minutes later, I went in and saw this:

Elaine Johnson George

Ok, here's a more detailed account of Elaine's arrival. (A lot of this is for my own benefit, so if you're not interested in details, you can just enjoy the slide show and skip this part).

Elaine arrived in a hurry. Here's a little timeline of our Thursday afternoon and evening:

11:30am midwife appt - dilated to 4-4.5
3pm contractions at regular intervals (4-5 mins), but nothing alarmingly intense
3:00 started bread
4:00 packed bags
4:00 put Georges on call
4:30 Mike got home
5:00 dinner
5:00 still having regular contractions, but not terribly intense
6:00 rolled out bread
6:00 Mike found major honey leak in the pantry
6:00 bathed Mariah
6:30 first hard contraction and first sign of back labor
6:30 called Georges to come over
6:45 hard contractions/back labor set in
6:45 Mike finished cleaning pantry
7:00 put Mariah in bed
7:00 took bread out of oven
7:00 left home (Mike ran across street to Beth and Bruce's so they could be at our house until Georges arrived)
7:25 checked in to American Fork hospital - dilated to 5.5-6
8:32 Elaine arrived

Mike and Mom were great helps during labor. I don't know how anyone delivers a baby without a husband AND a doula (mom).

I was able to hold Elaine immediately, and she nursed right away. I kept her for about an hour, just enjoying the miracle. Then I got up and showered, and we all headed to our new room. Mike and Elaine went to the nursery to get cleaned up. Elaine returned, still awake, with bows in her "curly" black hair. She was awake and alert for about 3 hours after birth!

At about midnight, Mike headed home to be with Mariah. They both came to visit the next day, along with lots of other family. Grandma Orva took Mariah home with her so Mike could stay with me for the day. We enjoyed a Quiznos dinner together and watched the last half of "Miss Congeniality." (Nothing like a Friday-night hospital date!)

Mike and Mariah picked us up from the hospital Saturday morning. Mariah was a bit concerned when we put Elaine in her car seat, but she quickly recovered when she saw her new pink one!

Elaine has arrived!

She was born on Thursday, July 10, and weighed in at 7 lbs 2 oz, measuring 19 inches long. Both Mom and Elaine are doing well. More details to come . . . .

Shoes

From the time Mariah was very young, she's had a fascination with shoes. One of her favorite pastimes is wearing "Mama's shoes."

God cares about the little things.

I had a great birthday! Mike and his family gave me some shoes I've really wanted but couldn't afford. They're crocs, but a bit more dressy than the normal ones. So comfortable! Mom brought me flowers (I took my books from my bucket months ago). The Georges brought me vegan cupcakes and garden raspberries. And Mike's grandparents brought me a whole case of huge raspberries.

Mariah and I walked to Mike's work to meet him for a birthday lunch. (It's fun for me to walk around this area. We're so close to the house we lived in while Dad was in law school; I picture Mom walking around with us little ones, along the same streets, going to the same park . . . very fun). Tine gave me a free entre coupon. It was great food, but my favorite part happened on our walk there . . . . I've been looking and looking for a glider/rocker wooden bench for our porch. They are too expensive ($200-250), though, and I haven't been able to find any used ones. Well, as we were walking down Center Street, we passed a little wood shop that sells benches, etc. And outside on the sidewalk was a glider/rocker bench for $50!!! It was their floor model, so very used, but still in good condition. They sell new for $250!! So, I went to lunch, got Mike's AmEx card and bought it on our way home. Mom brought Butch down later, and she and Mike picked it up. Happy Birthday to me!! I love it when things like that happen; it reminds me that God cares about the little things. The owner of the store had just decided that morning to put new floor models out and sell the old ones. He had just put the signs on a couple hours before . . . just for my birthday!

Little Swimmer

Mariah loves to swim! She asks all the time to go in the "wawer" and "kick kick." I got a cheap little backyard pool at our neighborhood grocery store, and we play in it almost daily. We've also been to a public pool just a couple of blocks from our house. She loves playing in the kid pool there. They have a great water playground with a slide that Mariah loves.

4th of July 2008

4th of July Festivities

We had a great weekend celebrating the 4th. Thursday morning, we got up bright and early and went to see the balloon launch. Mariah loved the balloons and the attention she got from Grandma Shaunna and her aunts and uncle who met us there. (She also loved the grapes).

Friday, the 4th, we met the George family at the parade. Mariah's favorite entries were the big blow-up animals. Her favorite things about the parade, however, was the puppy sitting behind us and the strawberries and banana I brought for her.

Friday afternoon, we picked up Grandma Orva and headed to Austin and Jen's for a swim party and barbecue. What a beautiful home and yard they have! We had so much fun swimming and visiting. (A tiny part of me was tempted to do a few laps of butterfly in the pool to get things going with the baby.)

We drove straight from the Linford bbq to the Hindmarsh bbq. We missed most people, but the Georges were still there. We enjoyed a relaxing evening in Grandma Shirlene and Gramp's beautiful backyard. We were able to watch the jets fly over the stadium, as well as the parachuters jumping from the plane.

Brian gave us a home fireworks show, and then we headed (with a very tired Mariah) to the BYU soccer field to watch the Stadium of Fire fireworks. They were spectacular, as usual. Mariah fell asleep within about 2 minutes of being in the car. She's never stayed up so late in her little life. (She was still up at 6:30 a.m. the following morning, but did give us 2 great naps that day).

We had a lazy recovery day on Saturday.
